What you get

Most CAD drafters can model what you describe. I can also tell you whether it will build, what the bench needs from the sheets, and where a design is costing you money for no reason.

2.1

Shop and production drawings

PDF

Dimensioned elevations, sections, parts lists and cut lists. Every dimension checked against the model before the set goes out.

2.2

Parametric 3D models

.f3d · STEP

Built in Fusion 360 with named parameters. Change a width or a board thickness and the piece updates, so size variants are an edit, not a redraw.

2.3

CNC packages

STEP · DXF · DWG · Biesse

STEP per part, DXF/DWG for nesting, hardware called out by name (Blum, Hettich, Cabineo, Lamello). Your operator programs from clean geometry, or I supply Biesse machine files.

2.4

Presentation renders

PNG

Product and interior views for client sign-off or your website, with a fixed camera and lighting so a range rendered over months still matches.

2.5

Construction that works

Advice

Joinery, timber movement, sheet-goods yield, knock-down and flat-pack. The difference between a model that looks right and one a shop can cut from.

2.6

Your units, your format

mm · inches

Metric or imperial, on your sheet size and title block if you have one. Revision rounds are included on every fixed-price job.

03

Fixed prices for one piece

One freestanding piece or a single cabinet. Built-ins, fit-outs, ranges and multi-piece jobs are quoted on their own scope: send the drawings and I'll come back with the scope and cost.

Prices in US dollars. Larger jobs are quoted as a package after I've seen the drawings, because the work depends on how many different designs are in it, not just how many pieces.

04

How it works

The same three steps on every job, so nothing is drawn before the decisions are made and nothing drifts between the model and the sheets.

1

Confirm the brief

Send a sketch, photos, a SketchUp or STEP file, or a set of dimensions. I come back with the open decisions: sizes, board thickness, how it will be built.

2

Model for sign-off

The piece is built parametrically in Fusion 360 and you review it in 3D before any sheets are made.

3

Drawings off the same model

Sheets come off the approved model and every dimension is audited against it. PDF, with STEP and DXF where the job needs them.

About

I'm Richard O'Sullivan, a furniture maker turned CAD designer, based in Santander, Spain, and working with shops in the US, UK, Europe and Australia.

I served my apprenticeship in Ireland, then worked in bespoke furniture and joinery workshops in Sydney, the last six years as managing director and part-owner of a high-end workshop: quoting, running production, and producing the shop drawings and 3D models the bench built from. I now do the CAD full time in Autodesk Fusion.

That background is the point. I know timber movement, joinery strength, sheet-goods layout, hardware and finishing from having done it, so a model from me is one a shop can cut from, and a drawing is one the bench won't send back.

Tools

Autodesk Fusion for modelling, drawings and CAM-ready geometry. Blender and Adobe Firefly for renders. Exports in STEP, DXF, DWG, OBJ and PDF.

Send one job.

If you're drawing at night or waiting on a drafter, the simplest way to try it is one job. I model it, you approve it in 3D, and the drawings come off the same model. Nothing else in your process changes.
